hey there,
I'm sharing a link with those of you who are inspired to join me in taking part in voicing an opinion that opposes george w. bush's energy plan. this plan has several components to it, most of which can be better explained by going to www.saveourenvironment.org directly.
i'd like to highlight and paraphrase a few parts of george bush's plan as i understand them...
one of them is to "explore" opening the heart of the Alaskan wilderness to oil drilling with the drilling specifically taking place in the center of the gwich'in peoples' land. their culture is based around the caribou with this animal being their source of food, ceremonial clothing and their spirit. this drilling would destroy the way of life of a people who have harmoniously lived on this land for the last 20,000 years.
95% of alaska's coastal oil plane is already open for oil development and the oil industry has already admitted that there is only a six month supply of oil on the land upon which the gwich'in people now live.
another part of this plan finds george bush wanting the federal government to subsidize and insure nuclear power plants (even since Chernobyl, nuclear power plants in the US have had numerous violations of federal safety regulations), rendering the corporations who built them not entirely responsible.
other parts of this plan has george bush wanting to build 1300 new coal power plants and seeking allowance for oil to be drilled off the coast of florida and in the rocky mountains. burning coal has been known to cause permanent and irreversible damage to the earth. (george bush's own brother opposes it in florida).
there are many things that can be done and we do have a voice... if any of you are compelled to take part you can do so by filling out a form (info/link here to letters/faxes to the senator) and e-mailing them and having a fax sent out on your behalf.... there are many alternative energy sources that can be used that will contribute to our taking care of this earth and ensuring its' survival for many years to come... a great example of this that i have just learned is that the sunlight the earth receives in 30 minutes is equivalent to all the power used by humankind in one year. the untapped potential of this is exciting news! it is news that george bush has chosen to ignore by his having cut renewable energy programs research by 37 percent and energy efficient research by 30 percent. an opinion that has been shared by many is that this is because the republican party received more than 25 million dollars in campaign contributions from the oil and energy industry.
we do not have to stand by and watch as some seemingly self-interested and short-sighted decisions actively take part in destroying the planet. i believe that what we do today affects all future generations and the earth upon which they live. what we do now plays a huge role in what kind of earth that will look like...
i would love to be part of doing whatever i can to help and i would be honored to do it alongside of any of you who feel inspired to as well... thanks for taking the time it took to read this.... i send you much love!!
